hollow wire hearts

I have been looking at hollow wire hearts and balls and wanting to try and make one myself. I was told that if i use cork clay i could do it but when i tried it didn't work as the wire kept uncoiling and i just ended up with a load of bent and twisted wire that didn't look like anything.

What am i doing wrong?
